Please note: If your exam is not listed below, there are no special preparations needed.
NPO: Nothing By Mouth
MRI: No pacemakers, aneurysm clip or bio nerve stimutators. No face makeup. No metallic objects on your body.
CT Scan:
- Abdomen: You must pick up the barium drink at least 24 hours before your exam at Pueblo Medical Imaging. Do not eat or drink regular food for 4 hours prior to the exam. If patient is diabetic, then light meal is recommended and take medication.
- Pelvis: You must pick up the barium drink at least 24 hours before your exam at Pueblo Medical Imaging. Do not eat or drink regular food for 4 hours prior to the exam. If patient is diabetic, then light meal is recommended and take medication.
- Head: Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to this exam. If patient is diabetic then light meal recommended and take medication.
- Neck: Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to this exam. If patient is diabetic then light meal recommended and take medication.
- Chest: Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to this exam. If patient is diabetic then light meal recommended and take medication.
- Virtual Colonoscopy: You must pick up your prep-kit 48 hours before your exam at PMI.
- Cardiac Scoring: No caffeine the day of test.
CT Guided Biopsies: Must have a PT, PTT and platelets blood work within 2 weeks before study. Need films 48 hours prior to exam, before we can schedule.
Breast Biopsy Services (Ultrasound, Stereotactic and MRI): If you take aspirin or blood thinner, please discontinue using these 2 days before the biopsy. Check with your physician. Regular medication should be taken as prescribed. Nothing to eat or drink for 3 hours prior to your exam. Do not wear powders, perfumes, deodorants, or lotions on breast, or underarms day of the exam. A comfortable two-piece outfit should be worn. Do not drive after examination. Please be prepared to have someone drive you home. Previous mammograms films need to be viewed, by our radiologist 48 hrs prior to exam.
Ultrasound:
- Abdomen: NPO after midnight
- Liver: NPO after midnight
- Gall Bladder: NPO after midnight
- Pancreas: NPO after midnight
- Right Upper Quadrant: NPO after midnight
- Aorta: NPO after midnight
- Pelvic: Empty bladder, then drink 48 oz. of fluid (no soda or milk) 1.5 hours prior to your appointment. Drink all fluids within 30 minutes. DO NOT empty bladder again until after exam.
- Pelvic with Trans Vaginal: Empty bladder, then drink 48 oz. of fluid (no soda or milk) 1.5 hours prior to your appointment. Drink all fluids within 30 minutes. DO NOT empty bladder again until after exam.
- Obstetrical: Empty bladder, then drink 48 oz. of fluid (no soda or milk) 1.5 hours prior to your appointment. Drink all fluids within 30 minutes. DO NOT empty bladder again until after exam.
Fluoroscopy:
- Upper GI: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. NO BREAKFAST, NO Liquids, smoking, or chewing gum on morning of exam.
- Upper GI with Small Bowel: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. NO BREAKFAST, NO Liquids, smoking, or chewing gum on morning of exam.
- Small Bowel: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. NO BREAKFAST, NO Liquids, smoking, or chewing gum on morning of exam.
- Barium Enema: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Please pick up prep kit at Pueblo Medical Imaging 48 hours before exam.
- Esophogram: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. NO BREAKFAST, NO Liquids, smoking, or chewing gum on morning of exam.
Intravenous Pyelograms (IVP): Nothing to eat or drink after midnight, though you may have a small amount of liquid with medication. Please follow prep instructions provided with prep kit, which you must pick up at Pueblo Medical Imaging 48 hours before exam. Please contact facility for information.
Endovenous Laser Therapy: Please contact facility for information.
Important: If your are taking diabetic medication containing metaformin, i.e. Glucophage or Glucovance, you must have a blood test 48 hours after your examination involving iodine. If you are allergic to IODINE and are having a CT with contrast, you must pick up medication from PMI at least 24 hours prior to test. DO NOT resume taking your medication until your physician has evaluated your lab results. ** If you are diabetic, have one kidney or have kidney problems, these exams require you to have a BUN & Creatine labs (blood work) done 2 to 3 days prior to your exam. Please contact your physician as soon as possible if arrangements have not been made for these labs.
